NORWEGIAN FOREST CAT FANCIERS' ASSOCIATION
CODE OF ETHICS for Catteries
1. I shall strive to uphold and advance the purpose of the Norwegian Forest Cat Fanciers' Association: to preserve, protect, and promote the Norwegian Forest Cat.
2. I have read and agree to adhere to the Constitution and the Bylaws of the Norwegian Forest Cat Fanciers' Association.
3. I will maintain a primary focus on quality. I shall strive to maintain health and good temperament. I shall attempt at all times to maintain and improve the physical and health aspects of this breed as defined by the breed council of my chosen registry.
4. I will conduct myself at all times in a manner which reflects credit upon the breed and the Norwegian Forest Cat Fanciers' Association.
5. I shall maintain appropriate cattery records and correctly register litters and cats.
6. I shall maintain standards of health and care to include but not limited to: (a) room for exercise, (b) regular grooming, (c) clean quarters, (d) ventilation and shade, (e) balanced diet and fresh water, (f) socialization, love and affection through daily contact with me or, in my absence, via daily contact with another appointed surrogate, (g) veterinary care for all cats in my charge as needed.
7. I shall strive to maintain current knowledge in the standard and specialized health care of cats based on the American Association of Feline Practitioners and as delineated by The Winn Foundations’ guidelines specific to, but not limited to, vaccination guidelines, multi-cat environments, health practices, policies, and procedures for cattery maintenance. I shall strive to be informed of specific health care issues of the Norwegian Forest Cat.
8. I shall deal honestly with the recipients of kittens and cats. I shall be forthcoming about any health issues a kitten/cat or its parents has experienced while in my care. I shall provide veterinary visit notes, any diagnoses made, and the protocol which was used by either my veterinarian or myself.
9. I shall assure that a cat/kitten is in the best possible condition and health before it goes to a new home from my cattery.
10. I acknowledge that a veterinary health certificate is recommended at the time the cat/kitten is transferred to the new owner.
11. I acknowledge that it is recommended that new owners and breeders follow a mutually agreed upon written contract describing all the terms and conditions of their agreement.
12. I shall encourage any new owner to contact the original breeder with any questions or if circumstances change and the kitten/cat must be "re-homed", and if this is not possible, create an awareness of the willingness of NFCFA to voluntarily help find new homes. In addition, I shall strive to find quality homes for all kittens/cats which leave my cattery by conducting personal interview with prospective adopters, to include potential contact with the existing veterinarian.
13. I will do my best to promote awareness and education about the Norwegian Forest Cat by educating and exchanging breed information with the public and with prospective Norwegian Forest Cat owners.
I understand this Code of Ethics is binding on all catteries who are members of the Norwegian Forest Cat Fanciers Association. I have read and agree to abide by and adhere to the above Code of Ethics.
